Description: Été 1969.
It was the summer of 1969 and a 17-year-old Toronto high school student who took pictures and wrote stories for the school paper got a remarkable shot at stardom.
On a whim, Godfrey Jordan took his portfolio of photos to the Toronto Star Newspaper and got hired as an entertainment freelance photographer. His first assignment was jimi Hendrix. Jordan continued to document moments from a series of concerts held during that summer by rock ‘n roll royalty—The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Lou Reed to name a few.
This iconic black and white photo of John Lennon and Yoko Ono was taken in a small room under Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, shortly after they’d played Lennon’s first live concert without the Beatles. It is considered to be ‘the moment’ when Lennon decided to leave the Beatles. This historic black and white photo was shot using a manually operated Pentax film camera. The only light in the room was a 60-watt bulb which adds to the grainy texture of the photo.
“One week after this particular shot was taken, he (Lennon) went back and told the other Beatles that’s it, I’m quitting the band. This is really the moment that everything changed for John Lennon.” Godfrey Jordan
