Description
Harold Barling Town (1924 - 1999) was active with the Painters Eleven group in Toronto from 1954 – 1960, coining the name of the group. Town was known as an unpredictable painter, exploring a range of contemporary and historical styles. During the 1970s, his artwork became increasingly whimsical, and we can see this as well as the influence of Pop Art. Town’s drawings became more simplified and used bold blocky shapes such as in the “Toy Horses” series of the late 1960s and 1970s. There is a similarity of form from the “Toy Horses” and Untitled Tapestry Sketch (1976), a preparatory sketch for the eventual creation of an art tapestry, both of which were included in the touring exhibition Canadian Tapestries in 1977.
