Description
Emily Carr produced ceramic works painted with native motifs to sell to tourists to augment her income. Carr did everything herself, from collecting clay from the cliffs below Beacon Hill Park to building her own kiln. In her book Growing Pains, she describes the ordeal of firing her kiln, a process that took up to fourteen hours, while she watched over the pieces until they “stood up holding their shapes with terrifying, illuminated ferocity.” She often signed her ceramic pieces with Klee Wyck, the name given her by the Indians, which means the “laughing one”.
