Description
Bio: Tony Scherman (B. 1950) is a Canadian figurative painter best-known for his encaustic portraits of historical and fictional figures strongly reminiscent of the17th Century Dutch painting style. He exerts his technical mastery with the encaustic technique using hot wax and pigments. “Young Torquemada” is the childhood portrait of Tomas de Torquemada - first Grand Inquisitor of Spain in the Spanish Inquisition. Tony’s interest in him is based on the poem “The Grand Inquisitor" of Dostoevsky’s in his novel The Brothers Karamazov about Torquemada as if he were to meet Jesus after death. Scherman exhibits worldwide and has been represented by Diane Farber Gallery in Amsterdam, as well as Sable Castelli and Barbara Edwards in Toronto.
