Bio: Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) was an iconic American artist whose work helped to establish both minimalism and conceptual Art. LeWitt had developed a uniquely cerebral approach to making art. Over the course of his career he would have a profound influence on both his peers and younger artists, including Frank Stella. Lewitt had a profound interest in the idea of a series, which when repeated would create a system with sequences of figures in motion. In ‘Forms Derived from a Cube” series, Lewitt approaches the simple form of a cube and reinterprets it multiple times in various ways. His pedantic approach to art making was very apparent in his multiples - works on paper in particular being the artist’s preferred method. His works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, the Dia Art Foundation in Beacon, NY, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
