Description
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1974, now lives and works in New York. He is a contemporary artist who works extensively in sculpture, painting, collage and film. He received his Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Manitoba in 1997. He has been compared to the outsider artist Henry Darger and is also known for his work The Royal Art Lodge. His work has been exhibited internationally and he is represented by David Zwirner Gallery in New York. Dzama’s works frequently feature a cast of hybrid figures and animals that resemble story illustrations, bordering on folk and craft storytelling traditions, influenced by Surrealist film, Dada and Soviet-era agitprop. Dzama’s drawings have been used on the covers of music albums, and he has collaborated on a series of exquisite corpse drawings with Raymond Pettibon, culminating in an exhibition at David Zwirner, New York in 2016.
