Description
Robert Goodnough (1917 – 2010) was an American abstract expressionist painter whose work varied in style and eluded categorization. He studies at the Ozenfant school of Fine Arts in New York in 1946, taking painting glasses from both Amedee Ozenfant and Hans Hoffman. In 1950, he received his Master’s degree from the New York University after which he became acquainted with artists and writers including Willem de Kooning and Helen Frankenthaler. He was one of the last of the original generation of the New York School: he was among the 24 artists who were included in the 9th Street Exhibition. Although Goodnough’s painting style varied throughout his career, he is known for his kinetic, almost calligraphic marking making and dashes of colour. From the 1970s onwards, Goodnough began working in Colour Field painting, to which he added his own stylistic changes. Paintings such as Slate Grey Statement, began as pale dashes of colour and would later evolve in the 1980s into more colourful compositions such as Colour White (1981) with coloured shard-like shapes.
