Description
One of the pioneering wave of Latinx artists using identity socio-politics to engage in new methods of aesthetic engagement, Lilliana Porter was born in Argentina in 1941. During the 1950s, he attended the Universidad Iberoamerican in Mexico City, studying under Guillermo Silva Santamaria and Mathias Goeritz, completing her training at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. In 1964, she moved to New York where she co-founded the New York Graphic Workshop along with Luis Camnitzer and Jose Guillermo Castilo. Porter works across a range of media including printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture. To Tell the Truth (2003) is an example Porter’s use of porcelain figurines, children’s toys and other kitsch objects in surreal compositions. These works hint at the absurd, revealing a wry sense of humour akin one of her major influences, Rene Magritte. Porter’s work has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America and Sculpture Magazine, and she was included in the 2017 Venice Biennale.
