Description
One of the most well-known contemporary artists, Jeff Koons was born in 1955, the son of an interior decorator and seamstress. He studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the Art in 1976. There, he met Ed Paschke, later to become the artist’s studio assistant. Koons moved to New York in 1977 advancing his career whilst working at the membership desk at the Museum of Modern Art, his career taking off in the 1980s. His work addresses themes of taste, pleasure, and commercialism, transforming banal objects into high art icons in the manner of Dada, Surrealism, and Pop. Puppy (1998), is a result of Koon’s much-loved large installation of the same name at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 1992. The sculpture also functions as a working flower vase, a vessel which in the words of the artist, “is a symbol of love, warmth, and happiness.”
