Description
Born in Los Angeles in 1978, Miya Ando is a half-Japanese, half-Russian-American contemporary artist. She is a 16th-generation descendant of Bizen sword maker Ando Yoshiro Masakatsu. In 1996, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkley and followed by studies in Buddhist iconography and imagery at Yale University. Known for her manipulation of metals in her sculptures, Ando has been described as a Post-Minimalist, and has drawn associations with space and light artists such as Robert Irwin and Larry B. Ando spent her childhood between a Buddhist Temple in Okayama Japan and a redwood forest in Northern California, this coupled with her ancestry has greatly influenced her art making. As a practicing Buddhist, Ando enters a “state of no-mindedness” as she creates her work. Her smooth ethereal works embody her working methods, such as Shout (2007) the light and reflectivity of the work is determined by the viewer’s vantage points while also gesturing towards the car culture of Los Angeles.
