Description
Lithograph on Arches paper, signed by Francis Bacon in green felt pen and numbered 29/170 in pencil, with the blindstamp of the publisher, the Art Poster Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, with full margins, framed. Printed by A. Manaranche at Mourlot Studios, Paris, France. The painting on which this print was based is titled "The Human Body (Study for Metropolitan Museum), which is the centre panel of Bacon's painting "Metropolitan Triptych" (1974/77). This print accompanied the retrospective exhibition Francis Bacon: Recent Paintings, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that ran from March 19, 1975 through May 31. The show was curated by Henry Geldzahler, the museum's Curator of 20th Century Art who commented in a March, 1975 press release that Bacon: "…has been a major figurative painter since the mid-forties and yet his work can stir as much debate as that of a debutant…. It is impossible to be convinced by criticism that dismisses a body of work as aesthetically compelling as Bacon's." (text concealed with framing mat)
